Located on the ground floor of Lever House, a modernist high-rise landmark, the esteemed Casa Lever restaurant required a sensitive renovation and refresh. DBA’s approach celebrated the original interior design, conceived by Marc Newsom in 2003 with a striking curvilinear geometry, while upgrading the spaces for contemporary use. Based on thorough research, materials ranging from black granite to Kyokabe plaster were carefully restored, infusing the space with a renewed glamor and energy.

The newly completed premises retain the restaurant’s legendary grandeur and glamour — with added gleam.

The project was an essay in restoration and material science. All manner of damages sustained over 20 years of operation were lovingly healed.

A new entrance to the restaurant from the outdoor dining plaza was created, requiring approval from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to carve an opening in the exterior wall of the 1952 building. For improved access to the plaza, DBA also designed a new lobby that sustainably reused richly hued sapele mahogany panels slated for demolition, and provides enhanced storage and display of Casa Lever’s impressive wine collection.

The life of a building or interior does not end upon completion but forms the fabric of our daily lives. Nothing can be more rewarding as an architect than to be a part of this.
