For the owners of Dante, named the world’s best bar, DBA designed Dante West Village, an elegant 68-seat aperitivo bar with an open kitchen and wood-burning grill. Situated in the Greenwich Village Historic district, the project centered around careful restoration — successfully receiving New York City Landmark Preservation Commission approval to combine two storefront spaces in a 1900 corner building. A new pressed tin ceiling unifies the space and reflects architectural heritage, while highly crafted finishes emerged from close collaboration on the interiors with client Nathalie Hudson. Dante West Village joined its parent restaurant in being recognized as one of the best bars in North America in 2025, as 60th best out of the top 100.

The historic wooden storefront was expertly restored, and included the reconstruction of a  previously demolished portion. This was then painted in Suffield Green, a gentle and sophisticated hue by English natural paint company Farrow & Ball, enhancing the bar’s street presence. The elegant exterior was featured as a location in HBO’s And Just Like That… featuring Sarah Jessica Parker.

With Dante so celebrated for its excellent cocktails, the centerpiece bar had to be special. DBA sourced a glazed lava stone manufactured by Italian firm Ranieri, which quarries the volcanic rock of Mount Vesuvius. The bar die wall utilizes its “onda tile”: a long block of stone cut with a scalloped profile, glazed in a deep green. Brass fittings sit between the pieces, topped by a Taj Mahal quartzite counter. Faceted mirror tiles, brass shelf brackets and glass shelves complete the back bar.

If you can be distracted from the food and yummy martinis, you’ll notice the charming, romantic decor: foxed-mirror walls, petalled light sconces, small tables with plush velvet seating.

The wood-burning grill takes its inspiration from those seen in Spain’s Basque Country. Its inclusion in the bar required close collaboration with the Department of Buildings and Department of Environmental Protection, which provide approval for such features on a case-by-case basis.  The experience equipped DBA with a deep knowledge base, navigating precise regulations to achieve a defining feature of the popular establishment.
